USA Today: Zydeco Wine, new show in William's future

When Jeff Landry wanted to get a party started at his 20-acre vineyard near West Monroe, he’d call Nathan Williams in Lafayette. Nathan and the Zydeco Cha Chas helped draw 1,000 people per show to the vineyard’s outdoor concert series for the last five years.

Landry figured if Williams could make people get happy feet and dance, he could make them even happier and drink wine.

“Some time back, I told Nathan, ‘We need to do a wine for you,’” said Landry, who established his vineyard in 1999. “He loved the idea of doing a label for him. We’ve been talking about it for a couple of years now.

“We just had to figure out how to do it, promote it and make it work. We hope to promote Louisiana music, Louisiana wine, Landry Vineyard, Nathan Williams, Louisiana tourism, Louisiana everything.

“We want to promote Louisiana and hope everybody wins.”

This summer, Landry Vineyards will unveil Nathan Williams Zydeco Wine, named in honor of the musician who’s been performing worldwide for 32 years. The vineyard will distribute this semi-sweet wine to more than 300 wines across the state and from its website.

Zydeco Wine may be paired with another history-making moment for Williams — a live, online stream. “Zydeco La La to the World” debuts at 3 p.m. May 10 at El Sido’s Zydeco and Blues Club in Lafayette.

Ex-police officer chose singing career

The stream, which features the band, zydeco dancers and Creole recipes, can be seen at chachalala.bigchief.tv or chachalala.com. The show will be part of the programming for the new Louisiana Digital Network, a YouTube channel from producers Bob Vernon and Sherman Bernard Jr.

Williams welcomes all the attention for his music and the state.

“I always think outside the box,” said Williams. “It’s a blessing and something we had been working on for a good while.

“It’s good to do stuff like that to boost up my career a little bit. You have to move on and do different things. Make it better for you.”

Plake leaves a coach shaking, advances on 'The Voice'

Zydeco Wine and the live stream add more highlights to Williams’ long career. Besides playing the Grand Ole Opry, Lincoln Center in New York and festivals around the world, Williams also appeared in “In the Electric Mist,” a 2009 movie starring Tommy Lee Jones.

Williams looks forward to more highlights.

“You’ve got bumps in the road. Nothing in life comes easy.

“But you just have to hold on. Stay positive and stay strong. Go with it. That’s what I say all the time.”
